ARCHITECT: prentiss + balance + wickline
PROJECT TYPE: new construction | single-family residence | house
SIZE: 2320 sf
LOCATION: port ludlow, washington
design + concept:
This project sits on a gentle slope over looking Hood Canal and Squamish Harbor.
The owners wanted a residence that was planned for the future as they retired and aged. This produced a single story residence that took advantage of the southern views.
The design was driven by low-maintenance and beauty. Thus practical solutions like concrete floors, metal cladding, and south facing glass with large over hangs were implemented for low maintenance and passive solar heating.
photography + process:
The use of the metallic materials dictated that we process the final photographs to illustrate an early evening glow we witnessed while photographing the project. We achieved this by adding additional local contrast to the final photos which gave the exterior shots a bit of sheen to them.
In addition, the residence took advantage of “letting the outside in” during the summer months so our interior photographs needed to highlight that design feature as well.
We used very little artificial light when shooting this project because the architect paid close attention to how the house, the owner, and the environment became part of the entire design.
